The Doctor of Apondo Village: Phina’s Dream
As the sun generously grace the day in various corners of this blessed land, the rays are overly dim and bright in some parts of the country and our attention shifts to a particularly small village in size but big in potential. The rising morning sun casts long golden shadows evident as the rays penetrate the dusts in Apondo that is settling from the morning activities that keep the village hooked but with little to no returns. We arrive in a small home filled with warmth, the incessant smiles from parents signalled a gleamer of hope even in a family that is pinched by poverty. We discovered a young girl, her name is Phina. While her surroundings are humble, her vision is panoramic.

A dedicated scholar, despite numerous challengs in studies due to challenges such as fees, Phina doesn’t just want to finish school. She has a dream. She wants to heal. She wants to wear a white coat, carry a stethoscope, and return to these very paths as a doctor. Her aim is to give back to the community in the future and support others also in the same path the got.
A Journey of Grit and Grace
In this Home Visit, we sat with Phina’s parents. We listened to their concerns, their levels of dedication and the kind of support they’d wish to deliver to their daughter, who is the first born and the apple of their eye, but all they have is hope and faith.

We listened to the incessant trials of moving around the village with the intention toi secure daily source of income that will deliver them from the oangs of hunger, despair and poverty. We listened to the rhythmic sound of tireless work; the kind of work that starts before dawn and ends long after dark, yet still struggles to put enough on the table.
In the parent’s eyes, we saw resilience. In Phina’s, we saw determination.
Despite these obstacles, a conversation with Phina highlighted one thing. She has a bright spark in every sense of the word. Despite the financial storm swirling around her family, her commitment to her education has remained unshakeable. She is the student who hardly ever skips a day, unless the school gates are closed to her because the fees remain unpaid.

She sat her Junior Secondary School and the results weren’t just numbers on a page; they were a testament to what she can achieve when she is given the floor to perform. The support and care she get determines her future and dream ambitions. Evidently, for Phina, school fees are more than just a bill; they are the barrier between her current reality and her dream of serving her community.
At Brightpath Kenya, we believe that a child’s potential should never be capped regardeless of their background. We believe in opportunity over poverty. Our mission and vision is clear and we know for us to achieve more, there is a bridge;
