Day 1 at the Mentorship & Empowerment Camp: A Day That Changed Perspectives

A Day That Changed Perspectives

Mentorship Camp: Day 1 Brightpath Kenya

One important aspect of philosophy in our modern world is change is inevitable. We assimilate and recognize with this modern worldly view and introspect with question that inspire our mission: what does it take to change young person’s life. At Brightpath Kenya, we believe that change is transformational and molding a young person’s life is pegged on having an honest conversation that is bold and rooted in care.

Day 1 of our mentorship camp was exactly that with three powerful sessions that tackled some of the most important topics young people face today. From the art of speaking and debating, to understanding the dangers of substance abuse, to navigating the complex world of teenage relationships, our mentors left no stone unturned.

Session Highlights

Finding Your Voice: Effective Communication & Debate

The camp opened with energy and conviction as seasoned mentor Josiah Adiema took the stage to guide participants through the art of effective communication and public speaking. The session quickly escalated into a lively and fiercely contested debate centred on a topic close to every Kenyan student’s heart: Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) vs. the 8-4-4 system.

“The best leaders are not those who speak the loudest; they are those who speak with purpose.”

Proponents and opponents squared off with well-reasoned arguments, defending and challenging each system with remarkable confidence. The session was a vivid reminder that every young person has a voice worth hearing; they simply need the right space and tools to use it.

The Hard Truth: Drugs, Substance Abuse & the Path to Freedom

The next session, Mentor Brian stepped in for what would become one of the most eye-opening conversations of the day. With honesty and depth, he walked participants through the full landscape of drug and substance abuse, from clear definitions to the sobering reality of addiction.

Critically, Brian drew an important distinction between misuse and addiction, helping young people understand that experimentation often begins innocuously; but rarely ends there. He explored why teenagers are particularly vulnerable to peer pressure and curiosity, and unpacked the far-reaching consequences that extend well beyond physical health;  broken families, derailed education, and lost futures.

But the session didn’t end on a dark note. Brian equipped participants with practical alternative coping mechanisms that revolved healthy, empowering tools to manage stress, emotions, and peer pressure without turning to substances.

Healthy Love: Understanding Teenage Relationships & Respect

Mentor Wenslas “took the stage by storm” and every participant felt it. In a session that was equal parts informative and emotionally resonant, he broke down what it truly means to be in a healthy relationship. What does one look like? What are its defining characteristics? And crucially where do the lines of boundaries, consent, and respect begin and end?

He addressed the often-unspoken topic of rejection, where he revolved around how to handle it gracefully, with dignity and self-worth intact. In a world where young people are constantly navigating social dynamics, romantic feelings, and the pressures of fitting in, this session offered grounding wisdom: that love and connection should always be built on mutual respect, clear communication, and unwavering consent. However, he warned young people against engaging in such practices as it’s not their time yet. Their focus should be in studies, getting the best grades and streamlining their lives in the career and future they want.

Be Part of the Journey. Change a Life.

Behind every session, every mentor, and every camp day is a simple but powerful mission: to elevate the lives of young, vulnerable children through quality education and holistic care. The conversations happening at Brightpath Kenya are just the beginning. These young people need consistent mentorship, safe spaces, and unwavering support and that’s only possible with your help. Whether you donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word, you become part of a story that truly matters.
